The annual Cape Town Cannabis March is happening next month on Saturday 06 May.
The first Cape Town Cannabis March I attended was in 2011. No one pitched. In 2012 with new organiser, Imiel Visser, in charge, we tried again, and succeeded! The march was small at an estimated 400 people, but it was the start of great momentum. The following year we saw around 2500 protesters, and that number has grown exponentially each year. Last year under the new leadership of Jo Berkhout from Bongalong, the march was an estimated 20,000+ people, and we’re hoping to shatter that number in 2017.
The cannabis movement in South Africa has taken huge strides this year, with medical marijuana bills being processed in parliament to the Cape Town High Court essentially legalising the private use of dagga as a defence in court. This is our moment to stand up, get out of the cannabis closet and show South Africa that prohibition is over.
